Introduction

In any enterprise-scale mobile project, the technology you choose matters.  But the real secret that’s rarely shared during a typical sales pitch is that technology, on its own, has no direct connection to return on investment or working mobile software; rather, technology serves as a multiplier.  Based on years of experience, we believe that organizations get the best return on investment when their technology successfully multiplies the effort of the people creating, maintaining and using the Mobile Workforce Management software solution.  The ability of people to get positive results using technology is where the real value of a successful Mobile Workforce Management solution lies.

Over the years, Blue Dot has learned that certain technologies beget massive and passionate communities of developers, and we believe that organizations should focus attention on those technologies.  For example, a less capable technology paired with a substantial developer community holds far more value than a more capable proprietary technology supported by a small community or none at all.

The idea of community is important for many reasons.  First, it means there are many developers working on and in that technology base, often adding to and improving it.  It means other software developers have probably already solved some of the difficulties an organization might be about to confront.  Since designing and implementing enterprise-grade Mobile Workforce Management solutions is complicated, if an organization comes across a new and challenging issue, it will have a large pool of experience to hire from and/or consult with.  The power of software developers working with a technology that they enjoy and embrace should not be underrated.  Happy developers equal better software, faster.  Also, everyone from software developers to network administrators has passionate ideas about the tools and technologies they love to use.

After watching many proprietary mobile technologies come and go (including our own), and upon much careful deliberation, Blue Dot has chosen to focus on widely adopted, industry-standard tools and technologies that have large and active user communities.  This approach provides the following benefits:

  1. Core tools and technologies are constantly improving and becoming more capable.
  2. A large and active developer community means less time spent on technical invention and more time spent on solving problems.
  3. A large developer community has allowed Blue Dot to find and hire exceptionally talented software engineers with relevant skills and experience.
